After the turbo is easier to install but reads lower and lags, so you work from a number that is already old. The objection to the pre-turbo position is the obvious one — swarf or a broken probe tip reaching the turbine — which is why the tidy answer is to drill and tap the manifold off the vehicle. Do not chase a specific ceiling number from a forum either: safe limits differ by engine, and the value is knowing what yours normally reads on your regular hills and noticing when today is different. Will fitting gauges throw a fault code or upset the engine computer?

No, provided each gauge runs its own sender. An aftermarket gauge is a closed loop — sender, wire, needle — with no connection to the engine computer, so it cannot generate a fault code. The exception is the install: drop a wire onto the wrong circuit and you can certainly confuse the vehicle.

Can I just tap into the factory sensor rather than fitting a second one?
